Cubs give gifts to elderly and frail

Cub scouts and their leaders continued a 30-year tradition of giving Christmas presents to residents of nursing and care homes on the South Cliff.

Scarborough and District Scout Council collected various gifts at its annual carol service at Westborough Methodist Church.

“It was a resounding success with standing room only for explorers, leaders and parents alike”, said assistant district commissioner Bonnie Purchon, who established the collection over 30 years ago.

“We raised £367.84, the most ever, in our collection and this year it is going to the young carers at Snainton”.

The preacher was Andrew Carter and the organist was Colin Brooke.

Long-service awards were presented to several leaders including Trevor Daniel (50 years), Valerie Rowntree (40 years) and David Jackson (40 years).

The parcels were taken to the Red Lea Hotel where the youngsters and adults convened before distributing them to about 200 residents at Abbeyfield, St Cecilia’s, Norwood House, Sunny Bank, the Lodge, Dulverton Hall, Briardene and other homes.
