very Christmas for over half a century, Scarborough Rotarians dress up as Santa, chuckle ‘yo-ho-ho’ and collect money for worthy causes.
This year’s Christmas Santa street collection was launched with the help of the mayor and mayoress, Martin and Cherry Smith.
It was in Westborough at the bottom of Alma Square, next to a Christmas tree and a colourful wooden representation of a sleigh.
Working in shifts, Rotarians spent eight hours a day in the middle fortnight of December accepting donations from members of the public.
They were hoping to raise about £3,000 for local charities
Club vice-president John Riby said: “The collection has been held for over 50 years and has, through the efforts of club members, raised substantial sums of money for local good causes in the area; over £30,000 in the last 10 years alone.
“The beneficiaries will receive their share in January”.
The club is a registered charity, formed in 1921.
