The close bond between OurCo and Scarborough YMCA has been strengthened by a £2,000 donation.
It is the third donation in just over a year from the charity, which raises money for people in the Scarborough, Filey and Whitby areas.
A year ago, OurCo gave the YM £5,000 in memory of Eileen Doubtfire, a highly-valued OurCo volunteer who passed away in August 2016.
Eileen’s daughter Katie is a huge supporter of the YM. She has been a member for 23 years, appearing in many shows and more recently has helped direct the YM’s Christmas Cracker productions.
In May this year, a £1,500 donation from OurCo enabled the YM to replace ropes used to raise and lower backcloths in theatre productions.
The latest donation will help provide opportunities to local young people who want to get involved in the performing arts, on-stage or behind the scenes, operating stage lighting or sound.
Veronica Thorpe, one of the founders of OurCo, said: “Eileen was the inspiration behind starting OurCo and we wanted to honour her memory in a meaningful and lasting way. What better way than to support the organisation that has helped her daughter and thousands of other young people?”
Scarborough YMCA is self-funding, responsible for raising all the funds needed to provide its services. It doesn’t receive money from local, regional or national government for the work it does with young people.
Director Steve Marsh says: “We rely on the generosity of individuals and organisations to help make up the £35,000 shortfall we have each year. We are very grateful to OurCo for their support and, of course, we are keen to hear from other local organisations who would like to help us continue to increase the skills, experience and self-confidence of local young people”.
Ourco is based in Northway. Donations of clothes, etc, are welcome.
