Students in Scarborough are set to kick off a fundraising calendar of events as they prepare for a trip to support vulnerable children and adults in Romania.

Early Years and Health students from CU Scarborough, which is part of the Coventry University Group, will be holding a number of events to help fund a trip to Oradea, in Western Romania, where they will deliver aid to vulnerable adults and children.

The students are kicking off their fundraising efforts with a Danceathon.  Taking place from 4pm on Thursday, March 8, the event involves a series of five 30 minute dance workshops priced at just £1 each.

Members of the community are invited to choose from Zumba, belly dancing, freestyle, ballroom or acro – or even take part in all five to help raise funds.

Donations are also welcome to help fund the visit, which will see students develop their skills and gain valuable, hands-on experience.

CU Scarborough is set to double its efforts in the country this year, with 17 students and three members of staff taking part in the 2018 trip from May 26 to June 2.

As well as raising money, those taking part are also appealing for donations of items including toys, craft supplies and clothing which will be distributed to those in need.

Yasmin Stefanov-King, tutor in Early Childhood, said: “Last year’s trip to Romania was an incredible way to help our students bring their course material to life.

“This year’s visit is set to be even better, with almost double the amount of students signed up to take part and deliver aid to those in need.

“It is an excellent opportunity for those taking part to gain hands-on experience while providing vital support to vulnerable adults and children.

“Our students are currently busy organising a number of exciting events to raise money for the trip, and we hope to see lots of people come along to CU Scarborough for our fun Danceathon event.

“We are also once again appealing for donations of everyday items which will be distributed to those we will be supporting and will make a huge difference to their lives.”

Anyone who would like to take part in the Danceathon or make a donation is asked to email Yasmin at yasmin.stefanov-king@coventry.ac.uk or call 01723 336700. Donations can also be left at the helpdesk at CU Scarborough, in Ashburn Road.
