Armed Forces Day

Scarborough to stage nation’s tribute to Britain’s armed forces

Armed Forces Day National Event, 27 June 2020

Scarborough’s no stranger to hosting major events, but it’s expecting to experience its proudest moment in decades on 27 June, as it hosts the country’s Armed Forces Day National Event, an action-packed, unforgettable tribute to Britain’s Armed Forces that includes the legendary Red Arrows, world famous Royal Marines Marching Band, and edge-of-your-seat displays by the Sea Cadets.  It’ll be the first time the national event has been held in Yorkshire.

The ceremonial raising of the flag on 22 June will signal the start of the week-long celebrations, which culminate in Saturday’s main event – a spectacular, free family day-out featuring breath-taking military displays by air, land and sea, a grand parade involving over one thousand service personnel and veterans, vintage music and dance, and a chance for everyone to test their skills in thrilling, interactive challenges.  The event is usually attended by a Senior Member of the Royal Family, the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Defence.

“Representing the whole of Yorkshire, Scarborough is incredibly honoured to have been chosen as the host town for this prestigious event, a reflection of its long and proud tradition with the armed services,” says Councillor Tony Randerson, the Armed Forces Day National Event Champion for Scarborough Borough Council.  “We’re expecting thousands to gather to show their support for the men and women of the Armed Forces community - the serving troops, veterans, cadets, and also the service families, and have already had tremendous offers of support.  This promises to be one of the region’s most memorable events, and we’re all rallying together so that Yorkshire can make the country proud and boost the nation’s spirits!”

Other events confirmed to take place during the week of the event include a children’s parade involving 20 local schools, a gala dinner, and live music concert at the Scarborough Open Air Theatre.

“Armed Forces Day is a wonderful moment in the year to celebrate our amazing military community,” says Alistair Halliday, Chief Executive Officer of RFEA, the Forces Employment Charity, one of the event’s key supporters.  “RFEA has been helping ex-Forces find meaningful employment since 1885 and we couldn’t think of a better time to fully support Armed Forces Day than our 135th anniversary year!  We’re very much looking forward to meeting with any ex-Servicemen and women, and their families, who are looking for support in their job search.  Whether it be CV writing, job applications, interview technique or beyond, RFEA’s specialist advisors understand the unique challenges faced when finding work on civvy street and they are here to help.”

Countryfile Live… the summer’s best day out!

BBC Countryfile Live is coming to Yorkshire for the first time this week, as the summer’s best day out gets set to take up residence in the spectacular grounds of Castle Howard from 15th – 18th August.

Countryfile Live celebrates every part of the British countryside for a full experience of everything the programme cherishes. The event is a celebration of the British countryside and the programme and embodies this with four days of live arena shows, debates, food, drink, farm -animal demonstrations and shopping from over 500 independent retailers and lifestyle brands, in the beautiful settings of Castle Howard.

The Countryfile team will be giving talks and hosting demonstrations, giving the public the chance to speak to and learn more about their favourite presenter, including Yorkshire’s own John Craven and Anita Rani!

To get a glimpse of your favourite Countryfile presenters, the Main Stage features a daily programme of talks and chats as Matt, John, Anita, Steve, Adam, Ellie, Charlotte and Tom all take turns to host throughout the show!

The fun doesn’t stop there, as Castle Howard’s South Lake will be transformed into ‘The Waterside’ where families can take part in fishing, kayaking and paddle boarding. Elsewhere the Jessops Photography Experience will give visitors the chance to hone their snapping skills and photography fans can also visit the Quilter Cheviot Capturing the Moment contest for some inspiration.

Visitors can get involved in all the outdoors action at the Wildlife Zone, the Dog Lovers’ Arena and the Equine Arena or enjoy a picnic in the National Trust Acre or a pint of Wainwright at The Craven Arms.

The event also hosts some inspirational debates at the Big Top, which will play host to a variety of guests from Sir Chris Bonington to The Hon. Nick Howard, Keeley Donovan and a myriad of Countryfile contributors.

There’ll be plenty of food and drink over at the Le Creuset Kitchen Theatre. Hosted by local legend Brian Turner, this is a must see with a host of celebrity chefs dishing up some culinary inspiration. In addition, the Graze Inn, an all-new food and entertainment experience, offers a summertime bar, stocked with refreshing drinks and a stage packed with local musicians, comedians and entertainers as well as a selection of artisanal food producers for visitors to enjoy.

The Farmyard and Farming in Action Areas will both educate and entertain with farmyard animals and impressive machinery on display, while the National Trust Theatre will feature discussions and debates from the likes of Ray Mears, JB Gill, Carol Klein, Blue Peter’s Lindsey Russell and Hannah Cockroft.

Other highlights include the National Trust’s 50 Things Woodland: the perfect place for little ones to experience the fun that can be had in the great outdoors with tree climbing, den building, bug watching and much more.

CLIFF RICHARD

TICKETS ON SALE 10AM - 18/11/18

CLIFF RICHARD

TO RETURN FOR SUMMER 2019 GIG AT SCARBOROUGH OPEN AIR THEATRE

The UK’s most successful hitmaker, Cliff Richard, is returning to Scarborough Open Air Theatre in 2019.

It is announced today that Cliff will headline Europe’s largest open air arena on Wednesday June 26.

Tickets go on sale at 9am on Sunday November 18 at scarboroughopenairtheatre.com

The show marks a return to the Yorkshire coast for the music legend following his sell-out show at Scarborough OAT in 2017 and comes as the singer is celebrating the 60th anniversary of his first single Move It! being released.

Marking this significant milestone, Warner's Music is releasing a new album of completely original songs. The album Rise Up is Cliff's 104th official UK release,  although it is the first album for 14 years, since 2004's Something's Goin' On, that features completely new material rather than Cliff's unique interpretation of classic songs.

Cliff is the second 2019 headliner to be revealed for Scarborough OAT following the announcement earlier today that Kylie Minogue will perform at the Yorkshire coast venue on Thursday August 1.

The announcements mark the start of the 2019 season and follow a record breaking 2018 which saw the venue attract more than 90,000 music fans.

Venue programmer Peter Taylor, director of promoters Cuffe and Taylor, said: “Cliff Richard is without a doubt a legend of the music industry. He has enjoyed massive success for 60 years and wows his audience time and time again.

“We have worked with Cliff on numerous shows and tours and are absolutely delighted to be working with him again, and especially to be bringing him back to Scarborough.

“The crowds loved Cliff in Scarborough in 2017 and I have no doubt they will have an absolute ball once again watching and hearing their hero perform the hits that made him a household name as well as his new material which is sure to be a massive hit.”

Cliff’s new album Rise Up will be released on November 23. The album’s title track is currently riding high in the vinyl charts and is his 145th official UK release, showing that Cliff continues to be a much-loved music legend, and someone who is very capable of entertaining with great energy and passion.

In 60 years, Cliff has recorded almost 1,300 song titles, composed 100 songs, achieved 14 number one singles (40 Top 5, 68 Top 10, and 96 Top 20), and seven number one albums (28 Top 5, 44 Top 10, and 53 Top 20). Move It!, where it all started, is the most recorded song in Cliff's back catalogue, numbering 23 different versions.

Able to change with the times and tastes and remaining hugely popular, Cliff nonetheless has stayed faithful to his rock and roll roots throughout. Because, when many people would be thinking of retiring or settling down to a quieter life, Cliff Richard continues to draw massive crowds to his concerts and regularly reaches the top ten with his albums. Not bad for someone who critics thought wouldn't last way back in 1958!

Tickets for Cliff Richard’s headline show at Scarborough Open Air Theatre go on sale at 9am on Sunday November 18 viawww.scarboroughopenairtheatre.com or from Scarborough Open Air Theatre Box Office (01723 818111) and the Discover Yorkshire Coast Tourism Bureau (01723 383636).

Naval Warfare

Naval Warfare

“The smallest manned navy in the world!”

Peasholm Park is a haven of tranquillity in our North Bay – unless the battle ships are taking pot shots at one another!

At times during the summer season, war breaks out on the Lake when 20ft replica boats recreate the tensions of a battle at sea.

For more than 80 years the “Battle of Peasholm” has been played out for 30 minutes three times every week during the summer season, delighting audiences who still find it hard to believe that these boats are mostly manpowered. Until 1929, all the boats were manpowered, but then electricity was introduced and now only the larger boats need to be steered by Council employees.

In the early days, the models were First World War battleships, called Dreadnaughts, mystery ships called Q-ships, a passenger liner called Orantes and a U-boat.

After the Second World War, the fleet was replaced with new vessels – this time the battle that was recreated was the Battle of the River Plate.

The British boats were HMS Ajax, Achilles and Exeter. The German battleship was the Graf Von Spee; the Royal Mail liner Asturias and a submarine completed the new fleet.

Around 1960, aircraft were introduced, altering the play of the ships but adding to the excitement for audiences who could not seem to get enough of the Battles!

Also in the 1960s more ships were added to the fleet – HMS Jervis Bay, British Pride and even the Ark Royal.

Although some of the smaller boats are steered by electricity and electricity is certainly used to power the aircraft, most of the boats in the Park, even today, are powered by Scarborough Borough Council employees!

A spokesperson for the Scarborough Tourist Information Bureau joked “It is of course the smallest manned navy in the world!”

Today the Battles still take place but now there is far less emphasis on recreating either World War; just on unnamed “friends” and an equally unnamed “enemy”. Gunfire and smoke continue to fill the air, however, and the aircraft drop bombs from above.

People flock to watch the Battles and they have been reported on and mentioned in many newspapers around the world.

Why don’t you take the time out of a sunny summer afternoon, to watch this amazing show?

The shows usually begin around the last weekend of May and continue until September 1st. In June, the shows are on Saturdays only, in July they are on Thursdays and Saturdays and during August, they are on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

POP UP CINEMA RETURNS TO DALBY FOREST - WITH A SLEEP OVER

Cinema goers can enjoy some of the latest films and all time classics in the beautiful surroundings of Dalby Forest when Pop-Up Cinema Yorkshire's GIANT movie screen returns this summer.

There are 6 screenings planned for Summer 2019 with the films Bohemian Rhapsody, Jurassic Park, Mary Poppins Returns, Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and by popular demand, The Greatest Showman. Each screening also offers the option of overnight camping in the forest.

Pop-up Cinema Yorkshire is part of Scarborough based company C3 Events who have previously been responsible for the hugely popular Beached Festival, Scarborough's Open Air Theatre and the annual firework spectacular 'Starfire'. Their cinema screen has been 'popping-up' around Yorkshire for the last five years, including sell-out screenings of Beauty & the Beast, Star Wars - The Force Awakens and The Greatest Showman.

Forestry England are working in partnership with Pop up Cinema Yorkshire to provide visitors with a chance to see their favourite films in unique forest venues throughout the year. A high quality cinema system will be erected for the events, as well as a range of themed food and drink stalls with a licenced bar.

Director of C3 Events Mike Lynskey said, "This is our fifth year showing movies in Dalby Forest and it's a fabulous place to watch a film. There is a brilliant atmosphere and obviously the forest is beautiful. We're billing the events as a "forest sleepover" as we are offering camping at all the Dalby events. You cannot normally camp out in the forest so were very lucky that Forestry England have allowed us to do this. It's quite a special thing. So pack your picnic and your tent and join us for an incredible cinematic forest adventure."

Tickets are available online at www.popupcinema.org priced from £14.50 for adults and £9.50 for children. Only a limited number of tickets are available, and early booking is essential to ensure a chance to be part of these events. The screenings take place in the evenings and begin at sunset.
